A World of Colour
While much of the design industry tends to favour minimalist palettes, Everybody Loves Salsa wanted to take the opposite approach.
In the film, the characters are not the only protagonists, as colour takes a lead role in successfully translating its message of unity, diversity, and liveliness and celebration of Colombian and Latin American culture and passion. Because of the premise of the project, it was vital that the visuals reflected that message. However, finding a vast colour palette that was coherent and harmonic was no small task.
The main colours are taken directly from the Colombian flag: yellow, blue, and red. From those three primary hues, the colour palette was expanded, developing complementary tones inspired by the fruit, fauna, flora, and everyday life in Cali. Over the span of a decade, Daniel has built an extensive yet balanced palette with colours that work together seamlessly.
“Since I first started the project in 2012, I have dedicated myself to the hunt for colour palettes. Little by little, I had gathered a colour palette with diverse tones that were harmonious with each other. That way, no matter which colour I used from the palette, it would always match seamlessly with any other colour in the palette.”
